To Activate a Blackberry Wireless Handheld

(Blackberry for Granted customers only)

The first step you need to perform is to notify FMI that you have a Blackberry handheld and would like to activate it. The engineer will then log on to our Blackberry Enterprise Server, add your account and generate the password you will need later on. Having done the above, here are the steps needed to activate your device so that you can send and receive email and synchronise your calendar and contacts.

  • With the device in your hand, check in the top right hand corner of the screen. You should see GPRS, EDGE or 3G in BLOCK CAPITALS - this is important. If any of these are in lower case then you need to contact your service provider and have them verify that you are enabled for BES (Blackberry Enterprise Service).
  • Having checked the above to be working we can then proceed to activate the handheld. From the main screen (you may have to hit the menu button to get this open, depending on your model) click on the Options icon, which looks like a spanner. From here scroll down to and click on Advanced Options and then Enterprise Activation.
  • You will now be asked to input your email address and a password, which should have been given to you by the FMI engineer from the first step. Certain Blackberry handsets also have a line asking for the address of the Activation Server - ignore this as it is not needed. So input your email address and password and click on the trackball and choose Activate from the popup menu. The handheld will now try ot establish a connection with our server and activate itself by making an encrypted connection and downloading a 'service book' and an 'IT Policy'. Depending on the size of your mailbox/contact/calendar this can take some time, but a percentage progress indicator at the top of the screen will let you know how far through the process you are. When this is finished you will be notified by a message on the screen and you are then all set to use your handheld.
